Summit's name dates to 1836, when early settlers recognized the area as the highest point on the Chicago Portage, the storied waterway passage linking the Great Lakes basin to the Mississippi River watershed. The Argo subdivision, annexed in 1911 and still widely identified by that name, grew up around a cornstarch manufacturing plant whose brand remains familiar in kitchens across the country.
