Naval Station Norfolk is the world’s largest navy base, so it’s no surprise that the adjacent community is heavily influenced by military culture. Close proximity to the base’s many workplaces as well as amenities like the NEX and commissary make this area highly popular among armed service personnel seeking off-base housing, as well as civilian military employees. Captain Slade Cutter Athletic Park and Sewell’s Point Golf Course are close at hand, providing terrific facilities for folks who enjoy an active lifestyle.
Old Dominion University is just a few minutes down Hampton Boulevard, providing quick access for students, faculty, and staff members. Downtown Norfolk, Newport News, and Virginia Beach are all just a few minutes away by car, allowing you to easily reach any of the region’s most popular attractions anytime.

Property Ratings at Merrimack Landing
Worst place that my family and I have ever had the misfortune to live. There are electrical problems constantly, leaks within the ceilings and walls, and bugs crawling everywhere, even though we never open a window at this point. All of the flaws were just barely veiled enough for us not to notice upon arriving, and so it is likely that we will get pinned/charged for all of it in the end. The best we have been told is that they will be remodeling all units...sometime within the next 2 years, (safe to say that we will be long gone well before then; as soon as our lease runs out, as we cannot afford to break it!). It is absolutely not worth the money. Do not be fooled by the location and supposed "low" price, as you will end up paying much, much more due to how poorly maintained this place has been.

I agree 100% with 'Good Value'. The price is better than almost any apartment in the area, but unlike most of the cheaper apartments, it is safe and clean. The neighbors are pretty friendly, and the area of the complex I live in has given me absolutely no cause to worry. A lot of military men and women seem to live here, and the rest appear to be young professionals/students. There ARE a lack of outlets, and the appliances are pretty dated- there is no garbage disposal/dishwasher in some units, and the fridge is... at least ten years old. All of it works well, however. The space is really, really good for the price. They spray weekly during the summer for bugs, although I have noticed a few (mostly june bugs) still get in. The on-site laundry facility is nice, but similarly dated. There are several playgrounds for kids, and some built-in dog walking areas (complete with complimentary bags and receptacles). When we first moved in we were told that it was acceptable- and encouraged, apparently- to make the place our own (i.e. painting walls, hanging/mounting electronics, changing fixtures, so long as the original items were kept or returned at the end of the lease). Nia, the agent we worked with, was super helpful and went above and beyond helping us. Maintenance was prompt and very friendly the only time we had an issue.

You get what you pay for but you really can't beat the price and proximity to the Naval base. The kitchen needs updating and lacks a garbage disposal and microwave. There are very few electrical outlets and no cable outlet in the bedroom, as should be expected with an apartment built in 1941. Other than that, the apartment Staff is friendly and helpful and were very accommodating when I needed to extend my move-in date. The on-site laundry facility is nice.
I just moved in on August 28, 2015 and I'm disgusted that they have roaches running all over the apartment. I've never had to deal with them living in any apartment. I'm breaking my lease and finding a roach free apartment.
I was impressed with the apartment when I rented. It is a single bedroom apartment, it has ample amount of room. I actually fit my king size bed in the bedroom and still have more than walking around room. It is great for military. Located right outside the gate. It takes less then a couple minuets to get on base. Which in Norfolk is half the battle of getting to work. The apartment is great and the location. Parking is not the greatest. I feel they could improve on that area. Besides that I love this place.
