Restaurants

Meadowbrook/Allendale offers a range of dining and entertainment options, particularly in the vicinity of Richie Street and North Allen-Genoa Road. There you can find Tony’s Shrimp Gallery and Taqueria El Aragan, a popular food truck. For seafood, try the Lighthouse seafood restaurant. In true Gulf Coast style, virtually everything on the menu has been dipped in batter and dropped in oil, just as Texans like it. The shrimp po' boy features as a stand-out menu item. The Lighthouse knows how fried seafood cuisine should be served, with French fries and not much else, but with servings this big, you leave satisfied.

A diverse collection of eateries can also be found in the area along the Gulf Freeway and Howard Drive. The Laredo Taco Company, the El Rey Bakery and Fat Maria’s Mexican prove to be worth a try.

Don’t forget to stop by the bright yellow Taqueria de Jalisco for authentic and oh-so-cheap Tex Mex. The decor and service may be basic, but you can’t beat the enchiladas. Try the ham and cheese kolaches at Dina's Donuts, a true Texas traditional food.

Nightlife of the inexpensive and adult sort dominate the Meadowbrook/Allendale scene. Cheap Mexican dance halls and holes-in-the-wall abound. Don’t miss Barney's Billiard Saloon for pool. For an authentic Texas experience, pay a visit to the friendly folks at CJ's Packet Icehouse and Grill. Order beer or wine and, in typical icehouse style, enjoy it with the dinner you brought along with you. The building’s garage door entrances contribute to the outdoor, picnic atmosphere. Strike up a friendly pool or darts game, and enjoy the fresh air or occasional live music concert.

History

The oldest parts of Meadowbrook and Allendale were built before World War II. After the war, developers created Forest Oaks and Oak Meadows for Houston’s growing number of middle-income residents. Meadowcreek Village, the newest development, features larger homes. Well-maintained ranch-style houses and apartments dominate the neighborhood, though some areas could use a fresh coat of paint.

There exist few art options, but a mere 15 minutes by car takes you to Houston’s world class Museum District as well as the Houston Zoo, Reliant Park and the Medical Center.

Transportation

Taxi companies and Uber serve the area, though it proves helpful to provide drivers with a specific address, as many are not familiar with smaller residential streets. Few pedestrians or bikers can be found, and no bike lanes exist, but the reliable Houston Metro buses stop here. Driver’s don’t need to worry about parking, which proves typical for Houston, as large lots remain ubiquitous and inexpensive, if not free. The Gulf and Pasadena Freeways skirt along the borders of Meadowbrook/Allendale, making access to the rest of Houston and Galveston quick and easy.

Cost

Rents for a one-bedroom residence average in the $650 range, slightly above the city average, though housing prices start below the mean. Bus fares to the city center run only $1.25, and a beer sets you back only about $2.50. Gas prices in the area run about 10 percent cheaper than the national average.

Shopping

Houston's plentiful pawn shops, jewelry stores, Spanish-language record shops, stores and strip malls yield few real gems in this neighborhood. Most shops cluster around the freeway and major thoroughfares, and no major shopping centers exist. British USA-Gulf Coast BMW acts as a standout for the motorcycle enthusiast. The shop specializes in BMWs and Triumphs, while the great service and top-shelf bikes prove to be unmatched by other dealers in town.

Looking for a tattoo to go with your new bike? Stop in at 1-45 Ink for a great price and professional service. A new hairdo to go with your leathers? The Mexico and USA Barber shop remains old school. Run by a husband-and-wife team and their sons, customers recognize it by the classic barber pole beneath the flags.

Residents visit nearby Plaza Paseo, a large shopping mall with stores like Macy's, Palais Royal, and Sears. Pasadena also acts as home to numerous flea markets where you’re bound to find that special treasure. For groceries back in Meadowbrook/Allendale, La Michoacana and Kroger offer anything you might want, and you can find numerous convenience stores, but no farmers market.

Parks

Despite a modest appearance at first glance, Meadowbrook/Allendale provides a surprising number of activities. Start the day with a round of golf at the Glenbrook Golf Course, which offers plenty of challenging water hazard. Other Houston courses draw more attention, so come here to get away from the crowds. The Glenbrook Swimming Pool lies near the beautiful grounds of the golf course and the meandering bayou. Expect a line in summer, as neighborhood kids flock to this spot, and their parents enjoy the many shaded areas.

Next, head to the Marksman Indoor Range. You can bring your own ammo, but Marksman offers good deals too. Lane rental runs only $8, and ladies shoot free on Mondays. First time shooting? The owner loves to give pointers to newbies.

Pick up the kids and head to Oak Meadows Park. Situated in the middle of residential neighborhoods, this free park features baseball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, a soccer field, a running track, and playground equipment. If you don't want to participate in athletics, you can find plenty of shade for relaxing, and dogs remain welcome.

The Meadowcreek Village Park offers many of the same amenities. Its community center sits in an even bigger green space and has been active since the 1950s. Community activities remain available for kids and adults at any time of the year.

The 8.73-acre Charlton Park can be found tucked beside Sims Bayou and offers a user-friendly community center, a basketball pavilion, a playground and tennis courts. Other small green spaces, such as Magueritte Ray Park, dot the area.

A few small community-oriented events occur annually throughout Meadowbrook/Allendale, mostly centered around holidays, but no large annual festivals or activities exist.
