Chicago businessman James E. Plew relocated to the Florida Panhandle in 1922 and chose this bayou-edged stretch of Okaloosa County as the most promising site for development, becoming one of Northwest Florida's pioneer developers. Two years later, in 1924, he founded the Bank of Valparaiso, cementing the town's early economic identity.

The city takes its name from Valparaiso, Indiana, which itself drew the name from Valparaiso, Chile. The Spanish meaning, "paradise vale" or "paradise valley," still resonates in the landscape today. Valparaiso and neighboring Niceville share a twin-city relationship, and the long presence of Eglin Air Force Base has woven a strong military thread through the community's identity ever since the base was established.

Waterfront dining defines much of the local food scene in Valparaiso. The Boathouse Landing, positioned along Boggy Bayou just off John Sims Parkway, serves fresh seafood for dinner and draws a steady weekend brunch crowd, with patio tables overlooking the water. Doc's Oyster Bar on Toms Bayou rounds out the bayou-side options for seafood lovers.

Its boat ramp operates around the clock, and a playground and picnic tables sit steps from the shore. A public fishing pier off Bayshore Drive provides a quieter casting option when the parks get busy.

For inland recreation, Marion Ruckel Recreational Facility offers tennis and basketball courts, and Little League Park has baseball diamonds. Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, about nine miles away, expands the options with nature trails, camping, and kayaking. Henderson Beach State Park, roughly 19 miles south, delivers pristine Gulf Coast shoreline.
