Rockledge takes its name from the coquina rock ledges edging the Indian River, a feature early settler Cephas Bailey Magruder noted when he arrived in 1876 and described his home as 'the rockledge home.' When the town formally incorporated on August 7, 1887, it became the first municipality in Brevard County, originally spelled as two words before the name was combined.

Through the late 19th century, Rockledge drew Northern tourists seeking a warm-weather retreat, earning a reputation as a premier winter resort destination. That era left a lasting architectural legacy: the Rockledge Drive Residential District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves roughly 100 historic buildings along Rockledge Avenue that still define the look and feel of the city's oldest neighborhoods.

Along the Rockledge Boulevard corridor, dining runs from local independents to familiar chains, with everyday meals easy to find without leaving the city. Nearby Cocoa Village adds waterfront taverns and cafes on the Indian River, rounding out the local scene with a more leisurely pace.
