Founded in 1908, the University of Mary Washington is a top-ranking, public university located in Fredericksburg at the intersection of Sunken Road and William Street. This liberal arts university sits in the heart of American history, just a short distance from the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. It is also only about an hour from Washington, DC's history and attractions. Considered one of the top 10 colleges in the South, students enjoy a fantastic, 176-acre campus perched on a hill with fantastic views. Downtown Fredericksburg, a beautiful shopping and dining district with historic buildings along brick-paved streets, is less than a mile from UMW -- just follow Sunken Road to William Street. Founded in 1728, Fredericksburg contains several historic sites, including the James Monroe Museum, built in 1786 and serving as the law office of President James Monroe before he was elected, from 1786 until 1789.
