Originally founded in Cokesbury in 1870 and relocated 10 years later to the heart of Downtown Columbia, Allen University stands as one of the state’s oldest and most prominent universities. The Chappelle Administration Building is one of the most recognizable facades in the city, and marks the campus’ northwest corner along Harden Street. The Yellow Jackets — the university’s mascot — enjoy an extremely small student body of just 600, making for small, focused classes and a close-knit atmosphere across campus.
Columbia’s two most popular entertainment districts, Five Points and Main Street, are within walking distance, as is the up-and-coming Bull Street District. The area was once the old grounds of the Columbia Mental Hospital, but today they house the Segra Park baseball stadium and a number of new restaurants and developments.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
