Founded in 1892 as the Slater Industrial Academy, Winston-Salem State University has become one of North Carolina's top universities. Winston-Salem State University is a public HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) with 40 areas of study and 10 graduate programs. WSSU has one of the top 10 nursing schools in the east and is considered one of the nation's "best value" schools. It was named one of the South's best colleges and one of the nation's top public schools by US News and World Report in 2016 and in 2017.
The campus is located on the southeast side of Downtown Winston-Salem, near the intersection of Rams Drive and South Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. To have fast access to both downtown and the university, look for apartments in West Salem or East Salem. If you'd also like to be near wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, look in West Oaks or Westview. For those who prefer sports and the outdoors, look on the southeast side of the university near Bowman Gray Stadium (NASCAR's oldest racetrack), Reynolds Park and the Reynolds Park Golf Course, and the Winston-Salem State University Recreational Fields.
