Although not a particularly old institution, the University of New Orleans puts you in one of America’s most historic and culturally rich cities, creating a wholly unique academic experience. UNO serves as an important contributor to the city’s robust academic community, and often integrates the one-of-a-kind community’s singular resources into the curriculum. In addition to the Privateers sporting events at Lakefront Arena and Maestri Field, the annual “Swampball” (aka mud pit volleyball) tournament is a local tradition for students.
Positioned on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, UNO is fairly far removed from the city’s notoriously rowdy tourist destinations. The mostly-residential Gentilly neighborhood just south of campus is full of affordable rental houses, apartments, and condos within a short walk of the university. City Park is just a few blocks to the southwest, giving you enviable access to the trails, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Tad Gormley Stadium, and the community sports facilities within the park. The Fairgrounds are also quite close, putting you within walking distance of Jazz Fest in the spring.
Of course, the entire city is famously packed with amazing food, music, art, and nightlife, and the French Quarter – the epicenter of it all—is just a few minutes down Elysian Fields Avenue.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
