First opening its doors in 1922, Indiana University-South Bend is one of the key institutions in America’s most famous college town. Positioned on the banks of the St. Joseph River, the fairly compact campus serves approximately 8,000 students, nearly all of whom are undergraduates.The IUSB campus is largely surrounded by residential neighborhoods, with a few restaurants and small shopping centers right across the river. Many of the local apartments, condos, and rental houses sit within easy walking distance of the university, making it easy to get around without a car. Downtown South Bend is a few minutes to the northwest, packed with restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses that are extremely popular with the city’s sizeable college crowd.
