Founded in 1881, Spelman College is the oldest historically black college for women in the country and is a National Historic Landmark. It is part of the Atlanta University Center Consortium, the nation's largest consortium of historically black colleges. In addition to Spelman College, the consortium is home to Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. Spelman College is ranked as one of the nation's best Liberal Arts colleges by US News and World Report, and it ranks number one for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Spelman's graduates include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker, actress Keshia Knight Pulliam, journalist Rolonda Watts, and civil rights activist Maxine Smith.
First- and second-year students are required to live on-campus, but the consortium's location is ideal for apartment-hunting. Spelman College is located on Atlanta's southwest side, just north of I-20. The college is just blocks away from Downtown Atlanta's favorite destinations, including the Georgia State Capitol, Underground Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, Philips Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Centennial Olympic Park. Mass Transit stations are available near the college for quick commutes. The West End Transit Station is south of Spelman College, while bus service is available within walking distance from Spellman along Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard, which provides service to the Marta Five Points Station.
