Established in 1956, the University of South Florida is one of the youngest universities in the state, but has rapidly built a reputation as a first-class academic institution and a fun social environment in one of Florida’s finest cities. With most of the classroom buildings located on the west side of campus, you’ll want to look for apartments in the Fletcher Avenue area if you want to be able to walk or bike to class quickly. However, the USF Commuter Student Network and an extensive bus system help students who live off-campus get to class even without the use of a personal vehicle. Situated on the north end of Tampa, the USF campus is fairly removed from most of the activity around town, but the city has no shortage of exciting attractions and nightlife to check out— whether that means catching a Rays game at Tropicana Field or partying in Ybor City. University Mall is practically right next door to campus, and Busch Gardens is only a few blocks away. Of course, being so close to the Gulf of Mexico, you’re likely to spend many weekends at the beach, which is only a few minutes’ drive from anywhere in town.
As of March 2026, the average apartment rent in Tampa, FL is $1,550 for a studio, $1,635 for one bedroom, $1,977 for two bedrooms, and $2,373 for three bedrooms. Apartment rent in Tampa has decreased by -3.2% in the past year.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
