As a key contributor to one of the nation’s most prestigious college communities, Southern Connecticut State University has been a valuable fixture in New Haven since its founding 1893. True to its roots as a teachers’ college, education remains one of the most popular fields of study at SCSU.
Between Southern, Yale, and its numerous other higher learning institutions, New Haven is definitely one of New England’s signature college towns. Southern Connecticut State’s campus is only about two miles from Downtown, and many of the nearby apartments, houses, and condos offer convenient walking access to both.
The city center is rich with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, performance venues, and galleries, with something to suit every taste. Alternatively, West Rock Ridge State Park site on the west side of the SCSU campus, providing a massive greenspace full of trails to explore and tranquil scenic area to soak in. Small clusters of cafes and unique local businesses can be found to the south and west as well: Stop into Lena’s or New West for your morning coffee, or drop into the New England Brewing Company for a pint after hours.
