Hocking Hills’ Historical Star of a Town

College Town Artistic Historic

Nelsonville is known as the star of the Hocking Hills region because of its rich history. The small town was once famous in the coal, clay, salt, and brick-making industries. Home of the Star Brick, Nelsonville was an epicenter for brick making during the Industrial Revolution. The town gained worldwide recognition when the Nelsonville Block brand won first prize at the World’s Fair in 1904. You can even see the last of the remaining brick kilns at Nelsonville Brick Park.

Now, Nelsonville is known for interesting attractions. Hop aboard the Hocking Valley Railway for a scenic ride on a portion of the railroad line that once transported salt, coal, and brick out of the town. The railway is a popular spot and does themed rides throughout the year. Residents also spend their time enjoying Nelsonville’s gorgeous natural areas. Rent a kayak at Murray’s Landing and paddle down the Hocking River or bike down the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, a 21-mile ride with inspiring scenery.

Nelsonville is also known for its thriving arts community. The art district is based at Public Square, the heart of town where most special events are held. Stuart’s Opera house is the cornerstone of the arts district. The restored theater that once showcased vaudeville shows now hosts over 75 live performances and multiple arts programs. Admire art at the Majestic Annex or purchase ceramic supplies at the Nelsonville Emporium. Every year the town hosts the Nelsonville Music Fest right in the arts district.
