Mather, CA Area Guide

The site was established in 1918 by the U.S. Army as a pilot training base during World War I, named in honor of Second Lieutenant Carl Spencer Mather, a pilot who died in service. Over the following decades it expanded into Mather Air Force Base, operating through the Cold War before closing in 1993 under the federal Base Realignment and Closure process.

What followed was a deliberate transformation: the airfield became Sacramento Mather Airport, now focused on cargo and home to an Air National Guard intelligence squadron, while the surrounding land was redeveloped into the residential community that stands today. The California Capital Airshow, staged at the airport each year, keeps that connection alive for the entire region.

Dining within Mather's boundaries is intentionally low-key, reflecting the community's residential character. Bradville Square Shopping Center, just west of the airport, anchors a small cluster of casual options, including Jangsu Korean BBQ for grilled meats and banchan alongside other quick-stop eateries. The Bradshaw Sandwich Shoppe offers a relaxed spot for lunch, and Capriotti's Sandwich Shop is available at Sunridge Shopping Plaza a few miles to the east.

For a wider range of cuisines, including Thai, Mexican, and American pub fare, neighboring Rancho Cordova fills the gap with a denser concentration of restaurants along its commercial corridors to the north and east.

Getting around Mather relies primarily on a personal vehicle. U.S. Route 50 is the main highway corridor serving the area, with State Route 16 accessible to the south and Interstate 80 within roughly 16 miles. Grant Line Road connects directly to Highway 99, opening a practical route toward the Central Valley communities of Galt and Lodi while bypassing congestion further north.

For public transit, Sacramento Regional Transit's Gold Line light rail reaches the Mather Field/Mills station about 5.75 miles from the community, with a park-and-ride lot holding more than 200 spaces. Amtrak service is available at Sacramento's station approximately 17.75 miles away. Sacramento International Airport is about 28 miles out, roughly a 39-minute drive. Within the community itself, sidewalks and short looped blocks make walking practical for local errands, and the Mather Heritage Trail, Stone Creek Community Bike Trail, and American River Parkway all support cycling as a real transit option.

Independence Community Park and Veterans Park both sit within walking distance of Mather's residential streets, each equipped with playgrounds and sports amenities. A short drive leads to Mather Regional Park, where Mather Lake draws anglers for seasonal bass and trout fishing alongside picnic areas suited for an afternoon outside.

The Mather Heritage Trail and Stone Creek Community Bike Trail offer multiuse paths through the community, and a portion of the American River Parkway's Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, a 32-mile corridor stretching across the Sacramento region, is accessible from here as well. The Mather Sports Complex adds ball courts, recreation fields, and a skate park, while the 18-hole Mather Golf Course hosts public rounds, leagues, and an annual PGA Camp. For longer day trips, Rossmoor Bar County Park lies about seven miles away, and Lower Sunrise Recreational Area is reachable within eight miles.

Grocery runs and everyday needs are covered by a ring of shopping centers within a short drive. Bradville Square Shopping Center to the west includes Grocery Outlet, while Food4Less provides another nearby option for weekly staples. KP International Market rounds out the grocery picture with a strong selection of Asian ingredients and prepared foods.

Sunridge Shopping Plaza, several miles to the east, includes a Raley's supermarket alongside other retailers. Stone Creek Village and Rockingham Plaza extend the retail reach further out, and the commercial corridors of Rancho Cordova to the north offer a broader mix of chain stores, specialty shops, and services.
