The earliest settlers reached this stretch of Oakland County between 1825 and 1830, drawn by Cass Lake's shoreline. Wealthy visitors began purchasing vacation land along the lake, and in 1890 a railway line cut through the area to link Detroit and Pontiac, opening the community to a much wider population. Around the turn of the century, prominent Pontiac attorney Joseph E. Sawyer purchased and platted land here, shaping the street grid residents still navigate today.

About a dozen restaurants line Cass Lake Road and Orchard Lake Road, ranging from long-standing Italian and steakhouse spots to a barbecue destination that has drawn attention across the Detroit metro. West Bloomfield Woods and Nature Preserve and E.L. Johnson Nature Center are both within a ten-minute drive for those who prefer forest trails over open water.
