Before Inlet Beach became a sought-after Gulf Coast address, much of its land was parceled out through a lottery system for World War II veterans, giving the community its early informal identities as Soldiers Beach and Veterans Beach. The name Inlet Beach itself predates the war, drawn from the nearby Phillips Inlet that still defines the eastern boundary of South Walton County.

Within a three-minute drive, the Alys Beach Town Center adds more upscale shopping, and the Village at Rosemary Beach, four minutes west, brings additional boutiques and browsing along a charming pedestrian streetscape.

For everyday essentials, Publix and Walmart are both accessible off Highway 98, and Panama City Beach's Pier Park, about eight miles east, fills in the gaps with Target, department stores, and a full range of retail chains when a bigger shopping trip is in order.
