Most of the community’s southern portion blends in with the surrounding St. Mary’s County countryside, with the north end hosting the majority of the residential neighborhoods. Hosting almost no major commercial activity, Great Mills mainly serves as a home base for folks who work in neighboring towns, including armed service personnel and civilian military employees seeking off-base housing. Numerous large shopping centers can be found just outside of town along Three Notch Road, particularly around the intersection with Great Mills Road near the Navy base.
