Located only about seven miles from downtown, East Memphis provides an active, urban lifestyle with a little more green space and a cozier feel. East Memphis is home to the University of Memphis, a public research university with several research centers, including the FedEx Institute of Technology. Because of its proximity to downtown and the presence of the university, East Memphis is a thriving business hub. It is also a shopping destination for many Memphis residents, home to the Laurelwood Shopping Center, the Eastgate Shopping Center, and Oak Court Mall.

East Memphis is flanked by two large parks. Overton Park, on the northwest side, contains the Links at Overton Park golf course, the Brooks Museum, the Overton Park Limestone Running Trail, the Levitt Shell amphitheater, the Old Forest State Natural Area, and the Overton Park Bike Plaza. The Memphis Zoo sits just outside of Overton Park.

On the northeast side of the neighborhood, Shelby Farms Park contains several lakes, the Shelby Farms Disc Golf Course, the Woodland Discovery Playground, and the Shelby Farms Dog Park. East Memphis is home to the Pink Palace Museum, the Children's Museum of Memphis, the Memphis Fairgrounds, and several golf courses: Memphis Country Club, Chickasaw Country Club, and Galloway Golf Course.
