Coram, NY Area Guide

As the oldest settlement in the central part of Brookhaven, Coram has a history that goes way back to the late 1600s. A man named William Satterly is thought to have been the first settler in the area in 1677. From 1784 through 1885, Coram functioned as the meeting place for the Brookhaven government, with the historic Davis Town Meeting House the gathering spot. By car, these roadways allow Coram residents ease of access to business and work locations; it is inadvisable to walk or bike around these roads due to safety risks. Taxis in Coram include Lindy's Taxi and Long Island Access Limo and Car Service, though your best bet may be to simply join the growing population utilizing Uber services.

Other popular modes of transportation in the Coram area include bus and train travel. Suffolk County Transit has several bus routes going through Coram, a great option for getting around locally for a small fee. The nearest train station to Coram lies in Medford, about a 10 to 15 minute car or bus ride away. The Medford Station of the Long Island Railroad takes commuters as far as New York Penn Station. For air travel needs, Long Island MacArthur Airport resides a few hamlets away, while JFK International Airport represents a farther option.

While Coram itself does not feature extensive parks in the immediate vicinity, its location grants convenient access to the more prominent parks east in Middle Island. Despite this, Coram has a few lesser-known park areas for residents to explore. Tanglewood Park on Hawkins Avenue has free parking, a jungle gym for children and a baseball field. Sequoia Park, while not as well-maintained as some of the others in the area, allows for hiking along a number of small trails free of charge. Each year the Coram Civic Association, an organization of over 100 dedicated community members, throws a Holiday Festival and Christmas Tree Lighting Event at the Old Coram Firehouse on Middle Country Road.
