Located on the southeastern shore of Brooklyn, the Canarsie neighborhood functioned as a fishing village from the days of the Canarsee and Lenape Native Americans tribes through the early 1900s. The rich cultural mix of this waterfront community on Jamaica Bay results from continuing waves of immigration that the Dutch started in the 1600s. Today, you can drive to Midtown Manhattan, about 20 miles away, in under an hour, or use the city's transit system of buses and trains.
Single-family home rentals, lively apartment communities, and condos throughout the neighborhood give residents plenty of style choices. For pizza, Original Pizza, a favorite of Old Canarsie, tempts locals with its Chicken Caesar Salad pizza, while Armando's Pizza thrills diners with its special Sicilian pie. Locals gather and relax at Canarsie Pier, constructed during the early 1940s on the former site of the Golden City Amusement Park, popular in the early 1900s.
As of September 2025, the average apartment rent in Canarsie is $814 for a studio, $1,420 for one bedroom, and $2,177 for two bedrooms. Apartment rent in Canarsie has increased by 0.9% in the past year.

I grew up in Canarsie and later in life worked as Both a teacher and a staff developer. The gifted program in the district has always been in high demand and has a long history of competitive and well managed programs. In addition they are one of the first and perhaps only districts to institute an integrated science in a seamless day program The teachers attended a summer long training program in order to learn the science program and took part in intervisitations. Many teachers utilize Columbia university's reading and writing process

I lived in Canarsie for over 16 years, and I love Canarsie. It is quiet and calm. Filled with honest hard-working people. Neighbors look out for each other and help each other out. The people that own and work in the neighboring stores are always friendly and helpful. Growing up in Canarsie I always felt safe, especially because I know I look different. I still felt comfortable to walk and go anywhere in Canarsie and I was always greeted with acceptance.

Lived in this area for 10 years, and it was beautiful and safe but has gone a bit downhill. It's a middle-class neighborhood however not one for those who would prefer a more suburban feel, however, it's still pretty peaceful.

Overall I think its a good area. The Seaview park is large. And the community is very family-friendly. I do recommend visiting int the pier.
