Boylston, MA Area Guide

Long before Boylston had its current name, Nashaway sachems Sholan and George Tahanto deeded the land to the Sawyer family, who led European settlement of the area around 1706. Residents petitioned for town status as early as 1697, but the British colonial governor refused, preferring to limit local governing bodies. It was not until decades later, after a meeting house was built in 1743 and the Reverend Ebenezer Morse was ordained as the town's first minister, that the community took formal shape.

Carved from land belonging to Shrewsbury and Lancaster, the town was named after philanthropist Ward Nicholas Boylston. Tahanto Regional High School carries on the name of the Nashaway sachem George Tahanto. A striking remnant of 19th-century architecture survives at Hillside Park: the John B. Gough House, an 1848 Italianate residence that stands as a recognized historic landmark within the park grounds.

Dining options within Boylston's town limits are intentionally limited. Residents tend to head toward the Route 12 corridor or nearby West Boylston for a broader selection of cafes, casual spots, and takeout. Back in town, small restaurants and coffee shops cover everyday needs without fanfare.
