Hyde Grove has an abundant collection of eateries in its north end and on San Juan Avenue in the middle of the neighborhood. You'll find Italian, Asian and American food in a reasonably small area, making supper a cinch.

Visit Mr Dragon Chinese on San Juan Avenue for truly scrumptious Asian comfort food. This place prides itself on authenticity and uses only the freshest ingredients to create its signature dishes. Don't miss the tasty cream cheese wontons or the delectable General Tso's chicken. All food is made to order.

Head over to Uncle Charlie's Sandwiches on Lane Avenue South for stellar subs, awesome calzones and arguably the best pizza in Jacksonville. This family owned business has been in the area for decades and has the gastronomic equivalent of a local fan club. Give the eggplant Parmesan sub a try — you might find yourself ordering an extra one for the road.

Mosey on down to Crabby Ben's Grill & Market for an excellent seafood menu. Locals love this place and people from the greater Jacksonville area also frequent it. Treat your tummy to the cheesy grits or opt for scallops for a truly oceanic dining experience. The crew at this hot spot is friendly and helpful, even on a busy Friday night.

Hyde Grove residents have plenty of options for evening entertainment. Hang out at a local restaurant for dinner and drinks or get a little wilder at one of the area bars. Stop by Judy's Pub on San Juan Avenue to play a little pool, throw a few darts and enjoy the music.

History

The Jacksonville area, particularly the region around St. Johns River, was inhabited for centuries by Native Americans. In the 1500s, European settlers arrived and for the next several hundred years, the Jacksonville area went through numerous cultural transitions before becoming an official United States territory in 1821.

Hyde Grove is home to a diverse group of families and individuals, almost a third of whom have children under the age of 18. Culturally, the neighborhood is a rich mix, making it an interesting place to raise a family.

Transportation

Most residents in Hyde Grove use a personal vehicle for the majority of errands. Stay in the vicinity or zoom into central Jacksonville via the Beltway, otherwise known as 295, on the west side of the neighborhood.

Walking and cycling are common, particularly given the number of stores in the vicinity. Most streets in Hyde Grove are safe for bicyclists, and there are dedicated cycling lanes on the southern half of Old Middleburg Road North.

Public parking isn't abundant in Hyde Grove, but some stores have car parks for customers and there are often spots available along residential streets. Many Hyde Grove residents park their vehicles in designated parking spaces, in garages or on driveways.

You can get to Jacksonville city center in about 40 minutes when you board a number 15 bus eastbound at the Normandy Boulevard and Memorial Parkway stop located at the north of Hyde Grove.

Hailing a cab on the street in Hyde Grove is almost impossible, however you can easily order a taxi via phone. Local cab companies include Checker Cab, which operates a stellar fleet of sedans, minivans and airport shuttles. Call ahead or book a car online. If you want to save money, try transportation network Uber. Uber X, Uber XL and UberBlack all serve the Hyde Park neighborhood and greater Jacksonville.

Cost

Living in Hyde Grove costs a little less than the Jacksonville average. You'll pay about $579 per month to rent a one-bedroom property in Hyde Grove — considerably less than an equivalent property in Jacksonville city center. Beer costs about $4.50 per imported bottle or $3.50 per domestic draft in a restaurant or bar. Craft ales vary in price depending on the brewery.

You can get into central Jacksonville by bus for $1.50 one way, or 75 cents if you qualify for a reduced fare. Seniors ride for free on Jacksonville's transit system.

Gas prices in Hyde Grove are equivalent to those found in the greater Jacksonville area, which run about 1.5 to 2 percent higher than the national average.

Shopping

Several commerce hot spots in the Hyde Grove area make shopping simple and easy. Normandy Boulevard at the north of the neighborhood is a convenient place to buy most everything you need. Get your prescription filled at Walgreens, visit the Walmart Supercenter for groceries and stop in at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits on Lane Avenue South for a Friday-evening treat on your way home.

Most high-end boutiques and specialty stores lie in Jacksonville's city center. Smaller food stores abound in the Hyde Grove area, however. Visit Wilson Boulevard Food Mart on Wilson Boulevard at the south side of the neighborhood for a selection of staples like milk, bread and coffee. Dollar General and the Welcome Food Store, both also located on Wilson Boulevard, offer residents a selection of different foods in conveniently compact settings.

Several farmer's markets serve the Jacksonville area. The most convenient all-season market is arguably Jacksonville Farmer's Market, located in the Riverside area about 8 miles from Hyde Grove. This large venue is open year-round and plays host to dozens of vendors. Explore a selection of local organic produce and handmade items.

Parks

Many Hyde Grove residents frequent Sweetwater Playground, located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood. This cute little park is as charming as its name suggests. With two playgrounds, a lighted basketball court, benches, a picnic area and restrooms, this is an outdoor hangout built for all ages. Plenty of parking spaces and free entry make Sweetwater Playground a sweet spot indeed.

Take your pooch for a run in Confederate Park Dog Park on Confederate Street in central Jacksonville. Located roughly 10 miles away from Hyde Grove, you can drive to this dog park in about 20 minutes. Sit and relax on one of the park's numerous benches while your pup enjoys off-leash fun or go for a jog along the paved walkway. Your furry buddy will love the pond and you'll love the dog rinse area for post-play cleanup.

Outdoor events in the Jacksonville area include the Jacksonville Jazz festival, which takes place on West Duval Street in the Downtown neighborhood. This annual springtime event showcases local and national jazz and blues talent in an open-air setting.
