Restaurants

Farmington's residential character means you don't find much of a dining scene within the neighborhood's boundaries, but a thriving retail district just a few blocks away along Hampton Roads Center Parkway carries an eclectic spread of restaurants. From popular chains and BBQ joints to casual Italian restaurants and soul food diners, the unique culinary collection reflects the area's diversity and charismatic community. Your servers greet you with a smile and learn your name after a few visits. Nightlife options remain slim with a few trendy spots for a casual drink, but most locals head to Coliseum Center for a more diverse selection. When the mood for baked ziti or steaming white pizza fresh out of the oven settles in on you, stop by Anna's Italian Restaurant. The laid-back atmosphere instantly makes you feel at home, and the New York-style pizza crust has made this charming establishment a favorite among local families. If you feel adventurous, indulge in the Philly cheese steak or a slice of chicken garlic spinach pizza. Get your soul food fix at Queens Way Soul Cafe, a down-home diner serving up shrimp, fried chicken wings and pulled pork. Choose from classic sides such as collard greens, yams and mac 'n cheese for a Southern-style meal that satisfies. The restaurant also hosts live music events and has one of the best happy hours in town, so be sure to stop in for a drink after work. For a night out with friends, locals pack into Park Lane Tavern located on Kilgore Avenue in the Peninsula Town Center. Inspired by the classic pubs of London, this popular night spot features a vast "Beer Bible" with lagers, pilsners and stouts from around the world, and be sure to sample the pub food menu with everything from sliders and Salisbury steak to homemade shepherd's pie and corned beef brisket.

History

Founded in 1610, Hampton stands as one of the country's earliest cities. The area along the southern shoreline originally served as a port for ships bringing in slaves from Africa, and the area grew heavy with turmoil during the American Civil War. It was not until the mid- to late-1900s that the suburban community of Farmington sprang up, making it one of the city's most modern neighborhoods. A short drive to nearby Newport News brings you to several exciting cultural attractions, such as the Virginia Living Museum and the Mariner's Museum. Living here also places you just a few minutes from annual events such as the conservation-minded Hampton Bay Days and the Holly Days light festival.

Transportation

Whether commuting to work or headed to a game at Hampton Coliseum, locals hop on Hampton Roads Center Parkway to I-64 for easy access to the rest of the city. Enjoy plenty of free parking around the neighborhood and in the nearby retail areas, and feel free to use Uber or a local taxi service, such as Apollo Taxi, for a quick ride. If you prefer public transportation, hop on a Hampton Roads Transit bus at one of the frequent stops along Todds Lane or Big Bethel Road. A network of bike-friendly roads and quiet residential streets make for an easy ride to the grocery store, but most amenities lie too far from the residential areas to reach on foot.

Cost

Known as one of the more upscale communities in Hampton, Farmington maintains a cost of living that hovers a little above average for the city. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in Farmington generally costs around $728. If you need to take the bus into downtown, expect to pay $1.75 for a one-way trip. Gas prices in the neighborhood hover around the national average, and a beer at one of the local bars costs $5 to $6.

Shopping

Living in Farmington places you just steps away from a diverse shopping scene concentrated along Hampton Roads Center Parkway. Stroll through the Hampton Woods Plaza Shopping Center for basic amenities such as restaurants, beauty supply shops and a neighborhood market, or head to Hampton Towne Center to find a movie theater and popular stores like Game Stop and Ace Hardware. Although Farmington has its own hidden gems, most of the high-end boutiques collect together in nearby Coliseum Central. Comic fans and gamers alike find a home at Heroes & Villains, a local comic shop with a large collection of original artwork, figurines, and trading cards. Find the newest issue of Spider-Man alongside older issues and a few classics. Stop in every Wednesday to browse the latest arrivals. Add some class to your wardrobe with a purchase from Ajay's Boutique. If you adore the conservative look of old-fashioned suit dresses and color-splashed sun hats adorned with silk blossoms, then this charming shop has the clothing you need. Also, browse a beautiful display of beaded necklaces, animal-print handbags, and glitzy tops from designer labels. When you need to pick up your weekly groceries, swing by Food Lion or Farm Fresh for all your staples. If you crave local produce, head downtown to browse the Hampton Farmers Market.

Parks

When you want to escape the suburban sprawl, kick back at Sandy Bottom Nature Park, a breathtaking public space with more than 450 acres of woods, ponds and marshes. The park places an emphasis on wildlife management and environmental education, and kids love exploring the informative exhibits at the huge nature center. If you want to get out on the water, rent a paddle boat, canoe or kayak for just a few bucks. Explore the hiking and mountain biking trails that snake through the wetland marshes, but be aware that some areas flood during the spring. Pet lovers also come to Sandy Bottom to let their pooches run wild in the dog park, which holds plenty of toys and obstacles for your four-legged friend. Remember to come by during the fall to gaze at the orange-hued trees from the wooden pier.
