  • Restaurants

Although a largely residential area, Baytown still manages to feature a number of terrific dining options, with several restaurants located on Garth Road. Residents appreciate popular food chains, such as Chipotle, Starbucks, and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. For more one-of-a-kind American cuisine, Ricky's Thick and Juicy Burgers promises customers the best gourmet burgers, with savory angus beef and specialty buns. The mouth-watering cheeseburgers and warm crinkle fries make for an unforgettable meal. Try the signature jalapeño cheddar or white sourdough bread to enjoy a true Ricky's experience. Nara Thai Dining treats diners to an escape from Texas with authentic Thai cuisine and a full-service sushi bar. Fresh fish, reasonable prices and a friendly staff make this restaurant a Baytown favorite. Cold beer, a laid-back atmosphere and a large patio hold the promise of a good time at Pipeline Grill, another favorite on Garth Road. From fire-baked pizzas to hearty sandwiches and tacos, its eclectic menu contains something for everyone to relish. Save a few dollars by coming early for the early bird special--a giant slice of pizza and a domestic beer. For a fun night out, Texas Avenue has plenty of options. Grab a hot latte or a crisp glass of wine at Cork Grinders. Live music and a cool ambiance create the perfect date-night oasis. Just down the street, The Dirty Bay Beer Company showcases talented acoustic musicians and DJs for your enjoyment. As a country bar with an old-time feel, this hot spot is ideal for hanging out with friends.

  • History

The first settlement in Baytown dates all the way back to 1822, with three separate towns eventually forming in the area. These towns merged after World War I, despite initial residential opposition, to become what is now considered the Baytown area. The emergence of off-shore oil drilling and the creation of the Baytown Refinery by former Texas governor Ross Sterling led to prominence in the area, as Baytown became home to the world's largest Exxon Mobil refinery. To this day, Exxon employs more people than any business in town. Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger and country musician Chris Cagel both grew up in Baytown, and other notable former residents include Oscar-wining screenwriter William Broyles, Jr. and NFL veteran Kirk Botkin.

Baytown Historical Museum on West Defee Street chronicles the rich history of the area and explores the community's proud tradition. Families enjoy the annual Christmas parade down Texas Avenue, and the yearly Pasadena Strawberry Festival features headlining performances by popular country bands.

  • Transportation

Due to the housing and infrastructure of the community, Baytown requires a vehicle for most errand running. Parking is easy to find, and predominately free. For cab service, call Baytown Express Taxi ahead of time to schedule your trip, as cabs are generally not hailed in this primarily residential area. Uber also serves the area. If, however, you prefer a public method of transportation, the neighborhood also offers a few alternatives. Bus routes on Greyhound Lines scattered throughout the city and the Harris County Transit present viable options for residents.

Interstate 10 and Spur 330 are easily accessible from Baytown, making travelling in and outside the area extremely convenient. The Fred Hartman Bridge connects Baytown to surrounding areas and provides a scenic drive over the Houston Ship Channel.

  • Cost

Surprisingly, the richness of life in Baytown doesn't come with a hefty price tag. Though groceries and health care parallel the expenditures in the greater Houston area, housing costs fall far below the national average. Average rental rates of $809 per month demonstrate the economic housing conditions available for residents of Baytown.

  • Shopping

Shoppers appreciate the popular, well-trusted brands of department stores in the community. Take a stroll down Garth Road to find familiar names such as Kohls, Target, Hobby Lobby and Walgreens, or visit the San Jacinto Mall for your purchasing needs.

The charm of Baytown presents itself in one-of-a-kind, vintage shops. Owned by the Parrish family since 1977, Town & Country Sales is a unique furniture store that displays its inventory of new, custom and antique furniture in a showroom. In addition to furniture sales, the popular local retailer offers complete furniture services, including restoration, large and small repairs, upholstering, designer finishes, veneering and more.

Southern Vapers, located on Texas Avenue, features quality vapors and a friendly staff who knowledgeably answer all of your questions with a smile. Feel free to sample its homemade flavors.

Residents frequent traditional grocery-store chains such as Wal-Mart and Kroger, which are both conveniently located on Garth Road. A short 15-minute car drive take you to the nearest farmers market, Deer Park Farmer's Market, where the locally grown fruits and vegetables are always fresh. Stop by on the third Saturday of every month.

  • Parks

Soak in the best of Baytown’s weather in one of the community’s more than 40 parks. These green spaces encourage families to bring their energetic children and pets to enjoy the great outdoors. Busch Terrace Park on Market Street features the beautiful Goose Creek trail for the zealous exerciser or casual stroller, a gymnasium, and a half basketball court for recreational fun. Roseland Park is a large outside haven with over 50 picnic areas, eight barbecue pits, playgrounds and sand volleyball courts to enjoy. This free park makes for the perfect afternoon of family fun. Baytown Nature Center, a Baytown treasure, practically begs you to come visit. For a small fee, you and your family can escape to nature. While there, discover the serene butterfly gardens, bait a hook on the fishing piers, view the breathtaking Houston Ship Channel and enjoy a leisurely walk on a tranquill nature trail. Be sure to bring your kids to the children's discovery area, where the youngest members of your family get to learn and play at the same time. Book a tour with the friendly staff to make your experience even more wonderful.
