The Argonne was built at the corner of 17th and Grand in 1919 when this area of Grand Ave housed the original "Auto Row" in Des Moines. It was built to house people working at the Ford plant across the street, which is now the Des Moines Schools Central Campus. With 4 stories of apartments above its street-level retail, the Argonne's first-floor retail space used to house a Packard showroom and a Cadillac repair shop. The building was restored and modernized in 2020, retaining the original charm and the first-floor retail space. Renovations were respectful of the original building, but did add modern conveniences like dishwashers and in-home laundry. Parking is available on-site.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at Argonne Apartments
I have called my apartment home for almost a year now, and despite some issues, I have received fast service. The building manager also made sure to keep in touch when things went crazy! Like the one time my breaker got tripped(didn’t realize this at the time it’s my first place alone) , all I had to do was send a message to the manager and she got someone up there asap to help. While my apartment was a little small for me, mostly cause I am a maximalist at heart these apartments are beautiful and historic! Glad this place was a safe haven for me and my cat
I travel all over the sates for work and was here all 2021 thek left to boston for work and came back in june 2022 and have been here since then. I will be leaving again but i can assure you when i comr back to the area for work this 2023 summer i will be staying here again. The apartment , the location and area male me feel real comfortable and safe i recommend then. 10/10
Staff is great, location is incredible, maintenance always communicates well and is quick!
Lived on the top floor in a studio and was pleased with it. Great hardwood floors and new amenities in unit. Would recommend this to anyone who's looking for a deal in the western gateway of Des Moines. I do not have a dog so this was a con for me, but could see this as a pro for others with one.
This is my second year living there and i feel so comfortable i normally travel for work all over the states and this is the apartment complex that i come back to stay whenever i gotta work in the des moines area. The location, parking and building is perfect.
I’m in love with my studio apartment! It’s full of natural light and close to all the best bars/restaurants. 10/10 recommend!!!
Had a 15 month lease with Argonne and enjoyed it. Had nice beautiful hardwood floors, and a very responsive management. Would recommend to anyone with dogs looking for a place on a budget in the western gateway.
Really great experience working with Monica! She was able to get me into the prefect apartment on the 3rd floor. Having been here for a few months now, I can genuinely say that this charming building is a great place to live.
