About This Home
At the end of a garden path in South Pasadena, behind a white picket fence and beneath the citrus trees, sits a cottage that appears to have escaped from a fairytale. Tucked behind the main house at 610 Prospect Ave, this one-bedroom ADU looks like it might hand you a tiny brass key, introduce you to a very organized rabbit, and send you down a garden path toward your next chapter. The property was built in 1906, making it 120 years old this year, and is included among South Pasadena’s historic properties. According to the owner, this little back structure began its life as a chicken coop before becoming an artist’s studio and, eventually, the cottage you see today. Chickens, artists, now you. Honestly, a flawless casting progression. There is sage-green siding, cheerful trim, a white picket fence and a manicured garden filled with citrus trees and winding stone paths. It is less “back house” and more “the charming little dwelling where the beloved side character gets the much better spinoff.” Your own fenced patio sits right outside, ready for morning tea, an outdoor dinner or an afternoon spent pretending your unanswered emails cannot cross the picket fence. Beyond it, the surrounding backyard is green, peaceful and so carefully tended that even the lemons appear to have excellent posture. Inside, everything is bright, clean and full of cottage character. White paneled walls and ceilings wrap the living space, warm wood-look floors run throughout, and woven light fixtures cast the prettiest little patterns overhead. There are windows in every direction, with leafy garden views doing most of the decorating for you. The kitchen is open and surprisingly generous, with plenty of cabinetry, stone counters, a gas range, refrigerator and a chunky butcher-block peninsula that can handle breakfast, dinner, laptop days and the occasional ambitious pie. Your washer and dryer are right inside the unit, because even a fairytale should include modern labor laws for woodland creatures. The bedroom is peaceful and nicely separated from the living area, with multiple windows, a roomy walk-in closet and its own window AC. The bathroom includes a walk-in shower and open shelving for towels, toiletries and the collection of serums that somehow became part of your personality. Then there is South Pasadena itself, a neighborhood that already feels like a movie set where everyone owns a bicycle and knows which booth they like at brunch. You are close to the shops and cafés along Mission Street, coffee at Jones or Lost Parrot, Thursday evenings at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, the historic Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain, Garfield Park and the Metro A Line when you want someone else to do the driving. Trader Joe’s is nearby too, should your cottage life require flowers, unexpected snacks and six different kinds of seasonal ravioli. Parking is neighborhood street parking, but once you step through that little gate and into this garden, the rest of Los Angeles feels several chapters away. Come see the cottage behind the picket fence. Happily ever after may still require rent, but at least it comes with in-unit laundry. Utilties bundled for $150 extra per month. Wifi not included.

Tucked between the city of Pasadena and the edge of Los Angeles, South Pasadena earns its nickname — the City of Trees — with canopied streets, well-preserved Craftsman bungalows, and a downtown Mission Street corridor that feels genuinely unhurried. Spanning just four square miles, the city carries a small-town atmosphere that stands apart from the surrounding metro sprawl, yet downtown Los Angeles sits a short drive away via the 110 freeway, making it a practical base for those who work in the city. South Pasadena is also the longest-running self-builder of floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade, a tradition that speaks to the community's deep local pride.
The housing mix ranges from classic single-family homes converted into rental units to boutique apartment communities nestled along tree-lined blocks. Studios and one-bedroom options make up a notable share of the rental market, while larger two- and three-bedroom residences offer more room in a quieter setting.
