New Paltz is a small suburban community located twelve miles west of Poughkeepsie between the Wallkill River and the New York State Thruway. The village is best known as the home of SUNY at New Paltz, a historic campus serving as the cultural and intellectual capital of the community. Around 8,000 students are enrolled at the university, which also employs many locals.
The villageās thriving Downtown shopping, dining, and entertainment district on the west side is packed with coffeehouses, unique restaurants, specialty shops, and nightlife hotspots catering to the student population as well as the community at large. The surrounding hills and forests provide beautiful scenery as well as incredible opportunities for outdoor recreation, particularly in the sprawling Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.
