Live in a bit of history: The Sage House was built in 1916 as headquarters for a philanthopic organization, the Russell Sage Foundation, by his widow. Russell Sage was a financier who was heavily involved with the construction of the NYC subway system. The building was then purchased in 1949 by Catholic Charities and converted as a residence for retired priests and nuns. It was sold again in the 1970s and made into an apt rental building, and was finally converted to coops in 1988 by Michael Beloff. A famous below ground brothel, complete with long mahogany bar, red velvet walls, and secluded hot tubs with overhead chains (all of which survived until about 10 years ago) operated in the building's basement in the 1930s and 40s (accessed thru the side door to the building on 22nd Street). That area is now occupied by storage cages available to Sage House residents. The Sage house was declared a historic landmark in 1996. See the building history on Wikipedia under Russell Sage Foundation NOTE: TO SAVE EVERYONE TIME AND EFFORT, READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE REPLYING.

Gramercy Park is an oasis of greenery located in Midtown Manhattan. If you choose to rent here, you’ll be surrounded by lush beauty and have a quiet place to live away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Plus, the opportunity to live in a private, fenced neighborhood is a rare treasure in New York City.
So, what is it like to live in Gramercy Park? The namesake private park is completely fenced in and can only be opened with a special key. Residents who live around the park have keys that grant them access to the exclusive park. The only non-resident key holders are 12 guests at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Even if you don’t possess a key, the surrounding sidewalks are beautifully landscaped and popular with joggers.
The good news is that Stuyvesant Square Park is public. Residents adore the neighborhood because it’s quiet and safe, with a wide selection of restaurants and bars along Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
