About This Property
The most desirable location in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, and one of the most amazing rentals available! Located on the NW corner of McCauley Street and Pittsboro Street, this very large first-floor apartment is on the west side of a two-story four-plex built in 1937. There are only three remaining historic buildings near campus originally designed for 1-bedroom apartments, and this is one of them. The apartment has a large separate bedroom (w/ 1 west-facing window 1 north-facing window, and 1 closet); a very large living room (w/ 2 south-facing windows, 1 west-facing window, and another closet); updated kitchen (w/ 1 north-facing window looking out onto a screened porch); small hallway with a third closet; a cozy dining room with original built-in cabinetry, and a 2 north-facing windows; and a nice, updated bathroom. Interior doors are original two-panel (with original brass doorknobs), and there is picture railing throughout. The apartment gets lots of light, with its many windows facing south, west, and north. And, to top it off, just outside the front door is a dedicated parking spot for tenants! The building is constructed "like a tank,” having exterior and interior walls made of concrete block surmounted by brick on the exterior, for an overall concrete block and brick wall exterior thickness of 13” which both helps keep the apartment quiet while also well maintaining temperature. (Almost all “modern” apartments in Chapel Hill – such as Carolina Square -- are put up with wood framing, hidden behind a brick veneer.) The apartment has its original 1½" oak floors, a type considered relatively rare due both to the special nature of the milling done to the wood, as well as to the extra labor required to install such narrow flooring. Appraised as having 856 square feet of “living area,” this apartment has the following actual interior room dimensions: 1. Living room - 18'2"x13'2", two south-facing and one west-facing windows, with a closet; 2. Bedroom - 11'8"x13'6", one west-facing window, and one north-facing, with a closet; 3. Dining room - 8'2"x8', one north-facing window, and built-in china cabinet; 4. Kitchen - 8'6"x8'3"; 5. Bath – 8’5”x4’10” – with tiled walk-in shower; 6. A small interior hall with a 1930’s built-in telephone nook, and closet; and 7. A north-facing screened porch. The kitchen has a relatively new refrigerator, large sink, gas range (!), Bosch dishwasher, under-cabinet lighting, and granite countertop. There’s a washer-dryer conveniently sited in the basement, and another in the adjacent first-floor central entrance hallway. There are only four units in the building, all rented to graduate students and professionals. (Photos shown are of a different, but similar apartment.) Whether you’re in Chapel Hill to study or work, or experience it as a retirement community, the 200 block of McCauley Street is undoubtedly the best location! It’s in the heart of the Cameron-McCauley Historic District, at the highest elevation in town. Convenient brick sidewalks facilitate an easy 3-6 minute walk to UNC’s Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Public Health, and Pharmacy. With an 3-7 minute walk one is on North Campus. (For many, time is money and money is substantially saved by living here!) Also, with a short walk one can arrive at many of the other destinations that make this area so great. The Global Education Center and the Carolina Inn are across the street; Kenan Stadium and Memorial Hall are less than a 5-7 minute walk; and Playmakers, the Arboretum, and Battle Park just a bit further. Great local restaurants and bars are an easy 3-12-minute walk, as well as fine culinary spots such as Mediterranean Deli, Tom Robinson’s Seafood, Cliff’s Meat Market, and Weaver Street Market, where tasty provisions can be found. Whether it’s getting to work/class on campus or in-town, or simply just going out and about in the heart of Chapel Hill, you’ve no traffic/parking hassles to worry about when living here! Location – truly! -- does not get any better than this! Please note: the apartments are not rented to those needing to park large SUVs or other, similar large-sized vehicles, and parking of these in the driveway – by both tenants and guests -- is prohibited. (Sorry! Usually there are parking spots on McCauley Street and Vance Street in the evening.) The apartment is being rented commencing July 1, 2024, at $1,650/month. Parking is included! Water is included. Electricity, gas, and internet/cable are individually billed. (Building is wired for GF.) Two months’ rent deposit required. (Pets OK with a $350 nonrefundable deposit.)
