While Wiesman/North Oaks may not have a central location for nightlife and dining, a number of neighborhood options exist in the vicinity of Interstate 680. Villagio Pizzeria features a selection of tasty appetizers of fresh-baked bread sticks and breaded ravioli. Patrons can also build their own pizza or choose from a selection of house specialties, such as sweet chili chicken topped with cream cheese, chili sauce and pineapple.

Voodoo Taco mixes together Cajun and Creole culinary roots to create delicacies such as alligator tacos made with smoked alligator sausage and asadero cheese. For a tasty veggie option, locals go for the fried avocado taco topped with carrots, cabbage and pico de gallo.

Legends Patio Grill and Bar serves up traditional pub-bar food and features 30 flat-screen TVs so patrons can watch the games. Choose from an assortment of fried appetizers, pizzas and burgers, and whet your whistle with a selection from the full-service bar with its wide selection of beer and signature cocktails. When you want the widest selection of drink options, wander over to the Library Pub, and check out the impressive list of craft beers and Scotch whiskeys. For live music, locals head to The Waiting Room and catch a local or national act.

History

What started as a small waystation for settlers traveling west soon become a final destination for many early pioneers. Immigrants were once attracted to this town on the Missouri River for work on the railroads and in the meat packing industry. Omaha has grown into a major metropolitan area with quiet subdivisions, such as Wiesman/North Oaks, and world class museums.

The Josylyn Art Museum, which features works by renowned painters Monet and Renoir, can be found in downtown Omaha. The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium provides a great educational option for children. Residents also have the opportunity to hear the Omaha Symphony Orchestra or watch a stage performance produced at the Omaha Civic Center. The annual Omaha Crush Festival, held in Stinson Park, gives locals the chance to celebrate the fruit of the vine as well and food and art.

Transportation

Most residents of Wiesman/North Oaks travel to and from the neighborhood by car, although public transportation provides a cheap alternative. While there may not be designated bike lanes in the neighborhood, walking and biking make for good options due to the short, winding streets that keep traffic to a minimum.

Omaha’s Metro Transit System provides dozens of bus routes that connect to transit centers located throughout Omaha. Uber services the area as well, and the city offers several choices for cab service. Calling for a cab, as opposed to flagging one down on the street, yields better results. Free public parking can be found easily on residential streets. For trips beyond city limits, residents can access I-680, which runs through the neighborhood, for connections to I-29 north to Sioux City or to rejoin I-80 for travel west to Des Moines. I-29 can also be taken south to Kansas City.

Cost

The cost of living of living in Wiesman/North Oaks lines up with the city as a whole and falls below the national average. A one-way ride downtown on an Omaha Metro bus costs $1.25. A bottle of domestic beer at a neighborhood bar costs between $3 and $4, and a bottle of import costs between $5 and $6. Gas prices fall about 5 percent below the national average. A one-bedroom apartment rents for an average of $711 per month.

Shopping

Shopping centers, such as Westroads and Oak View, offer residents a choice of upscale and casual retail shopping outlets. Everything from housewares, men’s and women’s apparel, sports and fitness gear, and jewelry can be found in these retail centers. Smaller boutiques and specialty shops can be found in the area as well.

Peak Performance provides runners with a great selection of shoes, clothing and running accessories to help them reach their own peak performances. Beyourself, a boutique founded by two local women, sells clothing and accessories to women with a mission to promote self-esteem. Residents who gravitate towards things of a mystical nature appreciate The Next Millennium, which sells an array of “treasures for the soul.” The store carries jewelry, crystals, ornamental pieces, T-shirts and statuary items to help its customers on their spiritual journey.

Residents of Wiesman/North Oaks have grocery options which include national chains such as Hy-Vee, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, but a neighborhood store such as Wohlner’s Grocery provides a different variety of grocery and deli items, as well as an impressive wine selection. The Omaha Farmers Market gives residents the chance to purchase locally grown produce from almost 100 vendors. The market convenes in the Aksarben Village neighborhood every Sunday from May to October.

Parks

Cunningham Lake Park provides a wealth of outdoor entertainment options for kids and adults. Fishing, boating, hiking, biking and picnicking keep families coming back year after year. For a free public space, nearby Tranquility Park has many options for competitive sports and exercise, including soccer and baseball fields and basketball and tennis courts.

Hefflinger Dog Park provides pet owners with a choice of two separate enclosures: one for small dogs and one for dogs of any shape or size. For outdoor summer fun in the park, folks head downtown to the Summer Arts Festival. Held every year in the Gene Leahy Mall, commonly known as Central Park, this event brings locals together with artists, entertainers and food vendors from around the area.
