Less than five miles east of Downtown Pittsburgh, Central Oakland is convenient to both the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. A mix of shops and restaurants line Atwood Avenue, the commercial center of this district, while many apartments for rent sit among the side streets.
Central Oakland shares its border with Schenley Park, a must for anyone who loves the outdoors. You can take part in a variety of sports at the Schenley Oval Sportsplex or walk among the flowers at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. One of the highlights of Phipps, the Butterfly Forest, lets visitors enjoy enchanting views of butterflies flying freely throughout the glasshouse room.
Central Oakland provides a rich amount of food options. Stop by the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company for some free samples, or grab a hot dog at the Original Hot Dog Shop, a neighborhood institution since 1960. After your meal, walk along the streets and admire the renovated Victorian buildings.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Property Ratings at University Commons
I am a senior at the University of Pittsburgh. Moving off campus can be a little of an uncomfortable change, given that you've likely lived in a dorm for a couple years prior. I started my apartment search in South Oakland because it is a popular area for students to move into when moving off-campus. Not all places there serve students well. You can experience anything from unkind landlords, dirty living spaces, and much more. University Commons Mckee Place is located in central Oakland and provides everything a student could need to have a good living experience. They value keeping their residents happy and feeling comfortable in their apartments. This was the first apartment that my mom was truly happy to see me in. As an out of state student, it means a lot to me to be living in a place that both I and my family feels comfortable with me being in. This is my first semester living here and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Thank you.
University Commons is a quiet and friendly place to live.
Apartments aren’t bad but management is unbearable. Refuse to give back security deposit for no reason
Great location near campus that come with cute balconies. Find a few roommates and the place can become reasonably affordable.
Apartments are clean and nice, maintenance requests were responded to promptly. Overall happy with living experience!
