Long Beach, like many neighborhoods in the Gulfport-Biloxi area was hard hit by Hurricane Katrina and has taken time to rebuild. Most of these renovations have taken place right along the beach. If you're looking for a spot further back from the prime real estate, there are residential streets located near Long Beach High School that are popular with boomers and families who don't mind being further away from the beach parties and nightlife scene.
If you can afford to set up on the beachfront, you'll never have a dull moment. Many of the businesses that were wiped out by the hurricane are now back and better than ever. Not all businesses have made it back, however. There are new building codes put into effect by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that have limited new developments in the most damaged areas. Restrictions have gradually reduced over the years, and you can expect the beachfront to only get busier as times goes on.
Cultural Attractions in Long Beach, MS
One of the most popular cultural attractions located near apartments in Long Beach isn't a piece of art crafted by a human, but rather one made by Mother Nature.
The Friendship Oak is located on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is a live oak tree that is more than 500 years old. It has survived Katrina and countless other incidents over the centuries. The tree and surrounding grove are a popular gathering spot for students and locals alike.
If more traditional works of art are your thing, there is a stretch along Railroad St. with several small shops that display the works of local artists. If you want bigger galleries, the community of Ocean Springs is nearby and features several galleries along its oak-lined main street.
Shopping in Long Beach, MS
As far as shopping within Long Beach itself, most businesses are located along the beachfront. Keep in mind that a great deal of these cater to tourists, with souvenirs and T-shirts for sale. If you want a more robust shopping experience, there are several major shopping centers located throughout the Gulfport-Biloxi metro area, all of which are within a 30 minute drive at most from an apartment in Long Beach.
The Gulfport Premium Outlets are probably the most popular location in the region as far as a specific shopping destination. The outdoor outlets are located on Factory Shops Blvd and offer impressive savings on high end brand names. Just some of the many choices here for stores include Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, Nike, Under Armour and Chico's. There are 70 outlet stores in total.
Biloxi is the other major city just a hop and a skip from Long Beach and offers several different shopping plazas but also an indoor mall. Edgewater Mall offers your classic American indoor mall experience, complete with food court, several big box stores and various other retailers.
Sports in Long Beach, MS
Long Beach is not home to any major professional sports teams and neither are Gulfport or Biloxi. The region makes do by adopting college teams in other close by regions. The city of New Orleans is within two hours and some locals may be fans of the New Orleans sports franchises. College football is also quite popular, with many long-time residents becoming fans of the University of Mississippi or Mississippi State.
Locally, the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast does have a few teams as well as intramural squads that Long Beach residents will cheer for. There is also a culture around high school sports and rivalries. Long Beach has its own high school and is rivals with other local schools, most notably nearby Ocean Springs high school.
If you want to actually play sports instead of just watch, you'll find a number of water sport activities down by the beach, including jet skiing and sailing. Fishing is also quite popular.
