University Place gets its name from a 19th-century plan by the University of Puget Sound to build a campus along Grandview Drive — the school never arrived, but the name stayed. Tucked into Pierce County about six miles west of Tacoma, the city sits along the Puget Sound with views of the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier, giving it a distinct Pacific Northwest character that feels both settled and scenic.
