According to their slogan, Statesville is "Where It All Comes Together." If you're looking for a fantastic Southern city tucked into the rolling, forested hills of North Carolina with beautiful neighborhoods and a historic downtown, then it definitely all comes together in Statesville. And while Statesville is roughly 40 miles from Downtown Charlotte, it might as well be worlds away.
This quiet, family-friendly city provides a great school system and a community where you know your neighbors -- you might even find yourself sitting on their front porch, in a rocking chair, sipping lemonade while kids ride bikes along shaded sidewalks. Priorities are different in Statesville, where things move just a little slower than in the city's more metropolitan neighbors.

Just by looking at the gothic Statesville City Hall building, built around 1890, you know this city has a story to tell. Settlers moved from Pennsylvania to the Statesville area around 1753. They named their settlement "Fourth Creek Congregation" because their settlement was four creeks from the neighboring village of Salisbury. In 1755, North Carolina's Colonial governor, Arthur Dobbs, authorized the building of a fort. Fort Dobbs was designed to protect the settlers during the French and Indian War, which took place from 1754 to 1763.
In 1789, the newly-formed Iredell County needed a county seat. The Fourth Creek Congregation was chosen, and the name was changed to Statesville. In 1889, Statesville became the first city in North Carolina to use electricity -- they lit up downtown for a full two hours. The town leaders weren't really trying to create history (although they did) -- they were just trying to find something better than gas street lamps to illuminate downtown in the evenings. After moving to a Statesville apartment, be sure to visit the Iredell Museums to learn more about the city's history.
The Fort Dobbs State Historic Site offers a glimpse into colonial North Carolina, especially during the French and Indian War. The park has a visitor's center, the Petit Sutler shop (a gift shop with colonial toys, games, and books), a nature trail, and a picnic area. Interpretive tours and reenactments are also available.
