Seaford is located along the Nanticoke River is Sussex County, Delaware. It has a population of just over 6,000 people and is just over three square miles in size. It's a small town, but one with a lot of character and an engaged community that loves their town. In fact, it was voted the 28th best small town in America in 1996 by the Prentice Hall publishing company's book on America's 100 best small towns. Here's what you need to know if you're moving to Seaford.

Finding Apartments for Rent in Seaford, DE

Though it is a very small city, Seaford has a few planned, managed apartment communities that are well kept and reasonably priced. Seaford is actually a good town for apartment communities because it attracts so many commuters who work in nearby larger cities. You can also find apartments in many of the town's older homes. Some of these homes have been converted entirely to apartments, while others have two or three stories with apartments on the top floors and the landlords in residence on the ground floor.

Top Neighborhoods in Seaford, DE

Seaford is much too small to have separate neighborhoods, unless you count the handful of apartment communities. The town is one homogenous area of houses, with a small commercial district in the middle. One residential street flows seamlessly into another, with no real distinction between them. Like in most small towns, there are "sides of town" that may have their own unique character and feel to them. However, it is only a short bike ride to get from one side of town to another, so any distinctions by whether you live on the east or west side of town is really minimal. Seaford doesn't have a top neighborhood, it is a top neighborhood for the state of Delaware.

Weather in Seaford, DE

The weather in Seaford is typical of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The summers are warm and humid, making jaunts to the abundant area freshwater springs popular. The summer season is also quite short, with the hottest weather lasting only from June to mid to late August. Winter is the longest season in terms of weather, and it can get very cold. Several feet of snow each year is common, though the town's relative proximity to the ocean keeps it from getting blanketed with it like other, more inland parts of the northeast. Winter weather runs from early November to late March or early April. Spring is wet, cool, and sunny, with lots of early flowers blooming from mid-April to the end of May. Fall brings crisp, cool weather that is jacket-worthy, but not freezing. This lasts from late September to the end of October, or sometimes into early November. The leaves change colors in a vibrant, extraordinary way in the fall, making Delaware and all parts of the northeast popular with visitors from other parts of the country at this time of year.

Cultural Attractions in Seaford, DE

Seaford packs a lot of attractions into a town that is just 3.46 square miles in size. There is something going on in town year round. Some of the more popular attractions include the Seaford Museum, the Ross Mansion and Plantation, and the Seaford Christmas parade. The museum displays items of significance to the history of Seaford from the time of the Native Americans to the present day. It is open Thursday through Sunday, except on holidays.

The Ross Mansion and Plantation is a property that is attached to the museum and used to belong to a former 19th century governor of Delaware. The mansion has all kinds of Victorian-era things you can see, such as a carriage house, antique farm equipment in an old granary, a Victorian-era cottage on the premises, and the only documented authentic log slave quarters in the state. The mansion itself is also a site to behold, having been made with bricks and completed in 1859. There are many pieces of furniture inside that originally belonged to the Ross family. The mansion is open Saturday and Sunday, except on holidays.

The Seaford Christmas parade is a chance for the community to come out into the cold together and celebrate the season in a way only the people of Seaford can. It is the largest Christmas parade in its region and is held the first Saturday night in December (before it gets too cold to go out after dark!).

Transportation in Seaford, DE

A main highway runs though the city, that highway being US Route 13. It runs the north-south route. Delaware Route 20 serves as the town's east-west thoroughfare. Both of these routes connect Seaford with nearby cities.

Seaford doesn't have an airport, but there is one 21 miles away in Salisbury, Maryland. This is the Wicomico Regional Airport. This airport is for commercial air service only. The nearest airport with public service is Laurel Airport in the city of Laurel, Delaware, which is seven miles away from Seaford.

There is freight rail service in Seaford, but no commuter or passenger train stops in town. The best way to travel within Seaford is by car, or, in a pinch, by taxi. The town is small enough that public transportation isn't considered a necessity.
