History

The City of Lubbock was founded in 1890, became the county seat in 1891 and was incorporated in 1909, the same year that the railroad arrived. The city owed much of its prosperity to the surrounding agricultural areas which were rapidly expanding due to irrigation and modern farming practices. By the 1980s several large corporations called Lubbock home, and the city became the economic hub of West Texas.

Although Remington Park is primarily residential, locals take advantage of Lubbock’s many cultural assets, including the Museum of Texas Tech University, which features southwest art, traveling exhibits and a planetarium. A favorite annual event is the Lubbock Arts Festival held at the downtown Civic Center. Live theater choices include the Lubbock Community Theatre and the Cactus Theater.

Transportation

Most neighborhood dwellers drive to their locations, and free parking remains the norm within the immediate area. With Loop 289 just to the north, residents have an easy commute to all major area employers and can be downtown in less than 15 minutes. Lubbock’s Citibus Route 5 follows Slide Road on the eastern edge of Remington Park, with a stop conveniently located at 82nd and Slide. The route takes 45 minutes to get the rider downtown and runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour on Saturdays.

Residents generally don’t walk or bike outside of the neighborhood, and locals agree that city streets and roads remain unsafe for cyclists due to the dearth of designated bike lanes. For taxi service, locals call ahead for a cab or request a ride with Uber.

Cost

The cost of living in Remington Park is on par with the Lubbock city average. Renters pay an average of $594 for a one-bedroom apartment and about $3 for a beer at the local bars. Area gas prices typically trend about 28 percent lower than the national average.

Shopping

Residents visit nationally known retail stores and local establishments along the Loop 289 corridor north of the neighborhood and along 82nd Street to the south. The South Plains Mall sits just across Loop 289 and contains five department stores along with over 150 shops and kiosks.

Local fashionistas on a budget head to the nearby Le Chic Boutique on 82nd Street. The consignment shop has won multiple Best of Lubbock and Best of the West awards and sells designer duds and handbags at a fraction of the retail cost. Chic cowgirls love perusing the largest selection of designer jeans in the Lubbock area.

Remington Park locals with a sweet tooth venture just over 7 miles to the Texas Tech area to visit the Arrogant Texan, a vintage candy shop located on University Avenue across from the campus. Those looking for hard-to-find novelty candies and homemade chocolates have hit the jackpot at this local confectioner. Customers enjoy the fun atmosphere, and ice-cream lovers can’t get enough of the many flavors of Amy’s Ice Cream, a Texas native.

Neighborhood residents have many nearby choices when it’s time to make a grocery run. Healthy alternatives include Natural Grocers on Slide Road and Sprouts Farmers Market at 82nd Street and Quaker Avenue. The Walmart Supercenter features a full grocery selection and sits off the Loop 289 frontage road less than a mile from the neighborhood. To experience a farmers market, locals go the Lubbock Downtown Farmers Market at 19th Street and Buddy Holly Avenue. This perennial favorite runs every Saturday from June through October with hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parks

Locals spend time outdoors at the neighborhood's namesake, Remington Park, a free city-owned facility that features Playa Lake and a nature area. This natural oasis is free of playgrounds and other developed facilities, but locals can stroll or bike to nearby Stevens Park or Jennings Park where they can indulge in fishing, volleyball, tennis or basketball. Both parks have playgrounds, and Stevens Park features picnic tables as well.

No off-leash dog parks exist in the city, but all local parks have dog-friendly policies for leashed pets.
