Officially El Paso de Robles -- Spanish for "The Pass of the Oaks" -- Paso Robles has grown into one of California's most compelling wine destinations, with more than 200 wineries and over 40,000 vineyard acres producing everything from Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel to Syrah and Merlot. Sitting at the geographic midpoint between San Francisco and Los Angeles along US-101, this San Luis Obispo County city manages to feel genuinely small-town while supporting a farm-to-table dining scene that has earned multiple Michelin recommendations. The historic downtown is walkable and compact, lined with boutique tasting rooms, antique shops, and locally owned restaurants, and the natural hot springs that first drew settlers here centuries ago remain part of the city's identity.
