Western Oregon University is a relatively small institution with a strong history of top-notch academic opportunities. Established in 1856, WOU is one of the oldest universities in the Pacific Northwest, and is regularly named one of the top public schools on the West Coast. The Wolves compete in the NCAA Division II, and home games are popular events for the campus crowd as well as the broader Monmouth community. Western Oregon’s hometown of Monmouth is a small community just a few minutes southwest of Salem, with WOU students making up a major portion of the city’s population. Many of the most popular hangouts in town sit just off the southeast corner of WOU’s campus, near Main Street Park. For more extensive dining, nightlife, and entertainment, folks often drive the twenty minutes to Salem or 35 minutes down to Corvallis. Due to the city’s small size, virtually nowhere in town is more than a couple of minutes away from the university, and just about anywhere on the west side of 99W will put you within a short walk or bike ride of the major campus buildings.
