Because it is essentially a suburb of Nashville itself, Murfreesboro can almost be considered its own neighborhood. Other than the downtown historic district, which consists mainly of shopping, there aren't any distinct neighborhoods in this town. They all kind of blend together into one homogenous town with a similar look and feel all over the area. Wherever you choose to live in Murfreesboro will be a good choice, as the area is known for its safety, good schools, and good neighbors.

The Murfreesboro Center for the Arts is always a good place to go for cultural entertainment. You will find things there such as concerts, theater performances, magic shows, and dances. The Murfreesboro Little Theater provides community theater to the area and its shows are popular with the locals. Murfreesboro has an International Folk Fest that has been going on since 1982. It is held each year in the second week of June, and countries from all over the planet participate in it by performing traditional song and dance routines with performers dressed in old-time regional clothing.

Murfreesboro has a Discovery Center at Murfree Spring, which is an interactive nature center and museum on 20 acres. The Center has a variety of animals to see and is very popular with children. The Bradley Academy Museum houses artifacts from the first school house in Rutherford County. It is an interesting place to go to see what old-time school in Murfreesboro was like. The Stones River National Battlefield is a Civil War battlefield site that commemorates the Battle of Stones River, which took place on December 31, 1862 to January 3, 1863. There is a museum, a national cemetery, and monuments on the site.

Finally, the Oaklands Historic House Museum is a sight worth seeing. This 19th century mansion existed before the Civil War and was occupied as a private residence until the 1950's. The city purchased it then, and turned it into a museum representing what a typical 19th century mansion in the area looked like and how the people in the house would have lived back in that time.

Living in Murfreesboro

  • Transportation

The Nashville International Airport is the main commercial airport serving Murfreesboro. There is also regional service provided at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport. There is plenty of highway access into and out of the city from every part of it, so no one has to drive to far to get to their entrance or exit ramp in Murfreesboro. Commercial rail service is available in the city, but there is no passenger rail.

The city has nine public busses that serve as the main means of public transportation in town, and has been in place since 2007. Each bus holds 16 passengers, which includes two wheelchair spaces. The busses operate weekdays from dusk to dawn, with extremely reasonable fares, and travel all over the downtown area.

  • Shopping

Murfreesboro has two malls within its borders. The Stones River Mall is a basic enclosed mall with big-name anchor stores like Dillard's, Forever 21, Books-A-Million, and Aeropostale. There are also chain restaurants there, like T.G.I. Friday's and Olive Garden.

The other mall is Avenue Murfreesboro. This is an outdoor mall, with higher-end boutique stores and fancier restaurants than the indoor mall. This mall attracts higher income shoppers who want a more distinct and special shopping experience.

There are many interesting independently owned stores in the downtown area. Unique restaurants that you can only find in Murfreesboro are located here, too. It's a wonderful place to go to shop local and support area merchants, while finding unique and interesting merchandise that you won't find in the malls.
