The majority of DuPont is a well-planned community with trails and green belts throughout, and residents generally enjoy a highly walkable lifestyle (particularly in areas like the de facto downtown area surrounding Ross Plaza Park).     Outlying McChord provides a residential area for many military families employed at McChord Air Force Base. The Joint Base Lewis-McChord serves as a major employer in the area; civilians and military personnel alike can call McChord home without being right on base. McChord is a family-friendly area with a population mostly comprised of military personnel. Though not a major urban area itself, McChord lies 11 miles south of Tacoma, and 42 miles south of Seattle.
