History

-

The Folsom area was once owned by the heirs of a wealthy San Francisco merchant. Joseph Libby Folsom then purchased the land, naming the area Granite City. It was occupied mostly by gold miners and became prosperous after Folsom lobbied for a railway connecting the area with Sacramento. When he died in 1855, the city was renamed Folsom in his honor.

In the 1980s, the railway system was abandoned, then reopened as part of the Gold Line of Sacramento's light rail system in 2004. Many ghost towns exist nearby, dating back to the time of the Gold Rush, including Prairie City, Salmon Falls, and Mormon Island. Up until 1886, when arsonists burned it down, a large Chinese American community lived in Folsom’s Chinatown area. You can learn more about the history of Folsom at the Folsom History Museum or the Folsom Prison Museum.
