West Village is a historic, up-and-coming neighborhood about four miles east of the heart of Downtown Detroit. This urban neighborhood earned its name for being located directly west of Indian Village, one of the city’s most prominent historic neighborhoods. Although the West Village only spans a few blocks, this small neighborhood packs a lot of charm. West Village blends the old and new, boasting a variety of historic architectural styles including Queen Annes, Tudors, and rowhouses along with modern apartment buildings. Rentals in the West Village range from affordable to upscale, so there is truly something for every renter here.
Along with quirky specialty shops and fitness centers, the West Village is known for its incredible dining scene. Some Detroiters claim the West Village is one of the best places to grab a bite to eat with its eclectic collection of eateries from Detroit Vegan Soul Food to Sister Pie, which is nationally known for its baked goods. Similar to other Detroit neighborhoods, the West Village fosters a diverse, close-knit community so it’s common to see locals at the community garden or chatting along sidewalks. Along with being proximate to Downtown Detroit, the West Village is also convenient to the Riverfront and Belle Isle Park, a 982-acre island with a beach, aquarium, trails, and more.
