The land beneath what is now FIU's Modesto A. Maidique Campus once served as Tamiami Airport, and the university's early days were shaped by that industrial past. When FIU opened on the site, airport hangars were converted into classrooms and former runway areas were put to new campus uses, giving the institution an unconventional architectural origin story.

The community itself was named after FIU's designation for its campus, and the two grew together over the decades. University Park was long recognized as its own census-designated place before being merged into the Westchester CDP for the 2020 U.S. census, though it continues to hold a distinct identity shaped by the university at its center.
