Located about an hour’s drive south of Albuquerque, Socorro is a historic city on the Rio Grande. Socorro’s storied past dates back to 1598, when Don Juan de Oñate y Salazar led a Spanish expedition north from Mexico. Socorro, which means help or aid in Spanish, honors its history with an array of well-preserved buildings in the Socorro Historic Plaza and extensive exhibits at Elfego Baca Heritage Park.
Socorro is home to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, which provides the community with a wide variety of educational, cultural, and employment opportunities.
