Socorro’s storied past dates back to 1598, when Don Juan de Oñate y Salazar led a Spanish expedition north from Mexico. Socorro, which means help or aid in Spanish, honors its history with an array of well-preserved buildings in the Socorro Historic Plaza and extensive exhibits at Elfego Baca Heritage Park.
