Located about 15 miles south of Philadelphia in Gloucester County, Sewell is an unincorporated community in Mantua Township which also contains parts of Deptford Township and Washington Township. Named after United States Senator Williams Joyce Sewell, Sewell is home to several notable landmarks such as the oldest bar in New Jersey, the Barnsboro Inn. Sewell also houses the Inversand marl pit, the world’s last operational greensand mine, which is renowned for its paleontology. Rowan College at Gloucester County and the Gloucester County Institute of Technology are located in Sewell as well, offering a host of educational and cultural opportunities to the community.
