Most of New Getwell was established in the decades following World War II, when more and more families started to seek homes outside of the bustling city center. This neighborhood went through few changes until the 1970s, when the relocation of shipping giant FedEx (then Federal Express) to the Memphis International Airport gave birth to renewed demand for housing in New Getwell and neighboring communities.

While the neighborhood doesn't have museums or an arts scene, its Memphis location gives residents access to dozens of art galleries, including the upscale David Lusk Gallery and the Art Museum at the University of Memphis.

New Getwell residents also enjoy participating in the dozens of annual events Memphis offers, including the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival every Labor Day weekend.

Many restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, with Winchester Road, Lamar Avenue and Democrat Road all housing diverse culinary options.

Jack Pirtle's Chicken, a unique Memphis staple since 1957, has a location on Lamar Avenue that remains popular with New Getwell residents who count the steak sandwich and the foot-long hot dog among their favorite menu items. One of the most family-friendly eateries in town, Jack Pirtle's puts up drawings on its web site that kids can print out and color, and then take to the restaurant to redeem for a free meal.

True to its name, the Wok and Roll Chinese restaurant provides a fun, upbeat ambiance for diners to enjoy what many consider to be the best Chinese food in Memphis. Workers in the area regularly take advantage of the lunch special. The orange chicken and the beef lo mein rank among Wok and Roll's most popular menu items.

Whenever a seafood craving hits, locals head over to the Catfish Cabin. This locally-owned eatery draws diners from all over the metro area with plenty of options, including catfish fillet strips and crab cakes. A 20-minute drive takes you from New Getwell to the world-famous jazz and blues scene on Beale Street in downtown Memphis. Vehicles remain the primary method of transportation in and around New Getwell. The area provides plenty of free parking as well as access to I-55 and I-240. The Memphis International Airport sits adjacent to the neighborhood and makes for convenient travel across the country or the globe. For residents who prefer public transportation, MATA (Memphis Area Transportation Authority) offers bus service throughout the area.

Other options for getting around town include taking a taxi, although you can't hail a cab in New Getwell. Calling a taxi cab in advance ensures a convenient ride wherever you need to go. Uber provides its ride sharing service to area residents.

New Getwell is served by Medal of Honor Park for outdoor fun and recreation. Free parking and admission ensure that this park remains an affordable as well as a fun place to spend a sunny afternoon with friends and family. The park is dog-friendly, so you can bring your pooch along with you for a day outdoors. While Medal of Honor Park doesn't have exercise facilities, a playground or annual events, its centerpiece is a beautiful lake, around which runs a fitness trail three-quarters of a mile long that locals use to burn calories and take in the scenery. Others prefer to use the park's abundant green space to throw Frisbees with their little ones or sit in the shade for a picnic lunch.

New Getwell residents enjoy a low cost of living while still living close to a busy city center. Expect to pay an average of $478 for a one-bedroom apartment and about $2.75 for a beer in a local bar. Gas prices in the area usually hover at least 10 percent lower than the national average, and a bus ticket to downtown Memphis costs $1.75 for a full fare.

Residents of New Getwell have plenty of shopping choices. The Southland Mall is less than 10 minutes away and provides a mix of big box retail stores, discount shops and high-end boutiques, while closer to the neighborhood sits an impressive selection of locally-owned specialty shops and boutiques.

Nothing says home like an inviting kitchen, and when New Getwell residents want to update theirs, they head to Signature Kitchens for the finest appliances, cabinetry and counter tops. Another local boutique, Dreamspun Creations, carries a broad assortment of flowers along with many other gifts and knickknacks.

For eclectic, fashion-forward looks. Women in Memphis head to Main Event Boutique in the downtown area. While it might be a bit of a drive from New Getwell, locals love the great selection and trendy atmosphere of this boutique.

The Piggly Wiggly, Whole Foods and Kroger all serve local residents for large grocery shopping trips, while locally-grown fresh produce can be found at the Winchester Farmers Market about 6 miles east.
