Sam Houston State University is one of the oldest public universities in Texas, located about an hour north of Houston in the small city of Huntsville. Students at SHSU account for a huge portion of the population in Huntsville, and the university is certainly the focal point of the community. Originally founded as a teachers’ college, education remains the most popular major, although the banking, performing arts, mathematics, and criminal justice programs are highly regarded as well. True to the institution’s namesake, the university also offers a unique selection of courses in Texas Studies. The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
