Established more than two decades before South Dakota became a state, the University of South Dakota is the state's oldest university. It dates back to 1862, when it was established as the University at Vermillion by the Legislature of the Dakota Territory. In 1883, the university move to Old Main and had a total enrollment of 69 students. Today, Old Main is one of the university's four buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With its unique blend of old and new buildings tucked among the bluffs overlooking the Vermillion River, USD offers a beautiful, tree-filled campus that sprawls across 216 acres. The campus is adjacent to Downtown Vermillion, a historic shopping and dining district that brings to mind cowboys on horseback and the Wild West. Vermillion is a terrific college town, offering great restaurants and shops among brick-paved streets. SDU is home to the state's only law and medical schools. It is also the land of Coyotes -- the USD Coyotes compete in NCAA's Division I as part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. To cheer on the Coyotes football team, look for apartments near the DakotaDome, located near the intersection of Highway 50 and North Dakota Street. For easy access to campus and downtown, look along East Clark Street and south toward East Main Street.
