Over the course of nearly two centuries, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has built a reputation as one of the top universities in the nation. The relatively small institution is best known for its robust engineering program, and in fact the school’s athletic teams are known as the Engineers. The institute strongly encourages students to get involved with extracurricular activities, with around a quarter of students participating in Greek life, three quarters playing sports at some level, and even an annual showcase for student-created computer games. The campus environment features an eclectic mix of old and new architecture, from the classic Victorian-styled West Hall to the sleek, ultra-modern EMPAC building. The hockey program has historically been quite competitive, and serves as one of the major focal points of campus culture as well as the broader Troy community. The RSI campus sits right on the edge of Downtown Troy, within easy walking distance of the city’s most popular off-hours hangouts. Manory’s Restaurant is a longtime favorite, a no-frills fixture at the corner of 4th and Congress since 1913. The area is packed with classic college bars, and late-night hotspots like I Love Pizza are perfect for an after-hours snack. The north side of campus is bordered by residential neighborhoods, while the west side blends apartments with the downtown social scene, so you have a variety of options for living arrangements while staying close to the university.
